How Does the GP Calculation Work?

Your Grade Point (GP) for a semester is calculated using a weighted average formula. For each course, you multiply the grade point value of the letter grade you earned by the credit unit assigned to that course. These products are then summed up and divided by the total number of credit units you registered for.

THE FORMULA

GP = Σ (Grade Points × Credit Units) ÷ Σ (Credit Units)

The key difference between the two scales is the maximum grade point assigned to an "A":

5-Point Scale (CGPA / 5.0)

Used by most federal and state universities in Nigeria. An "A" grade earns 5 grade points.

A70 – 1005 pts
B60 – 694 pts
C50 – 593 pts
D45 – 492 pts
E40 – 441 pts
F0 – 390 pts

4-Point Scale (CGPA / 4.0)

Common in polytechnics and some private universities. An "A" grade earns 4 grade points.

A70 – 1004 pts
B60 – 693 pts
C50 – 592 pts
D45 – 491 pts
F0 – 440 pts

Quick example (5-Point Scale): If you take MTH101 (3 units, Grade A = 5 pts) and ENG101 (2 units, Grade B = 4 pts), your GP = (5×3 + 4×2) ÷ (3+2) = (15+8) ÷ 5 = 4.60 / 5.0 — that's a First Class performance!

Which Grading System Does My School Use?

The grading scale your institution uses depends on its type and accreditation body:

Universities → 5-Point Scale

The 5-point (CGPA / 5.0) scale is the standard for most federal and state universities in Nigeria, accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC). This includes institutions like UNIJOS, UNILAG, UI, ABU, OAU and many others.

Polytechnics → 4-Point Scale

The 4-point (GPA / 4.0) scale is predominantly used by polytechnics and some private universities, accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE). Institutions like Yabatech, FUTO (Poly), and many state polytechnics follow this system.

Important Disclaimer: These are general guidelines. Some private universities and specialized institutions adopt a modified 4-point scale or a hybrid system. Always verify your school's official grading policy with your Student Affairs office, your Faculty handbook, or the Academic Regulations document provided during registration.

How Do Carryover Courses Affect Your GP?

This is one of the most misunderstood aspects of the Nigerian university grading system. When you fail a course and carry it over to the next semester, those failed credit units do not disappear—they stay in the denominator of your CGPA calculation.

Think of it this way: your CGPA is calculated over all credit units you have ever registered for, not just the ones you passed. A zero (F grade) still contributes zero weighted points but its credit units keep inflating the total, pulling your average down. When you retake and pass the carryover course, the new grade replaces the old one in most universities—but the damage to semesters already recorded remains in your cumulative calculation until all carryovers are cleared.

Practical Tip: To add a carryover course in this calculator, simply add it with its Grade F (0 pts) and credit unit to see how it drags your GP. Then update it to your new grade after re-sitting to see the improvement. Always prioritise clearing carryovers early—they compound over time.
