UniGuide Terms and Conditions

Introduction:

Welcome to UniGuide, a web application designed to facilitate navigation and connection within campus communities. By accessing or using UniGuide, you agree to be bound by these Terms and Conditions.

Definitions:

UniGuide: refers to the web application and its services.
User: refers to you, the individual accessing or using UniGuide.
Content: includes all information, data, and materials provided or generated on UniGuide.

Terms of Use:

Eligibility: UniGuide is intended for students, faculty, and staff of participating institutions. You must be at least 13 years old to use UniGuide.
User Conduct: You agree to:
- Use UniGuide for its intended purpose.
- Comply with all applicable laws and regulations.
- Respect other users' rights and privacy.
- Not harass, abuse, or intimidate others.
- Not post or transmit prohibited content (e.g., hate speech, pornography).
Content Guidelines: You agree to:
- Post accurate and relevant content.
- Not infringe intellectual property rights.
- Not post spam or self-promotional content.
Geolocation Services: UniGuide may request access to your device's geolocation data to enhance the accuracy of the campus map. You agree to allow access to geolocation when requested. Ensure location sharing complies with privacy regulations on your device.
Intellectual Property: UniGuide and its content are protected by intellectual property laws. You may not reproduce, distribute, or modify content without permission.

Accounts, anonymous use, and sign-in

Certain features of UniGuide may be available without creating an account (for example browsing public map content). Other features—such as creating or editing map markers, submitting photos, ratings, or comments, managing a profile, or using campus tools that require identity—may require you to register and sign in. You must provide accurate information where registration is required and keep your credentials secure. You are responsible for activity under your account except where caused by our error or a security failure on our side.

User-generated content, contributions, and moderation

You may submit content including map markers, descriptions, photos, links to institutions or organizations, ratings and reviews, article comments, and requests to create or update universities, faculties, departments, or related records. You retain responsibility for your submissions and warrant that you have the right to provide them. By submitting content, you grant UniGuide a license to host, display, process, and modify such content as needed to operate the service, including in connection with maps, search, and navigation.

UniGuide may use a contribution system that assigns scores, tracks approval status, and may require review before changes go live. Certain trusted roles (such as organization administrators or designated contributors) may have submissions handled under different rules. We may approve, reject, edit, remove, or delay any submission at our discretion to protect users, comply with law, or maintain platform quality. False, misleading, or abusive submissions may result in restriction or termination of access.

Information about institutions may come from third-party sources or community submissions. We do not guarantee that all such information is complete, current, or error-free. You should verify important details independently.

Transactional and program emails

We may send transactional and service-related emails—for example verification, password reset, welcome messages, and messages related to your contributions (such as recognition when you reach contribution score milestones). These are part of operating the service and the contribution program; delivery is not guaranteed and depends on valid contact details and third-party mail systems. Disclaimer and Liability:

UniGuide disclaims all warranties, express or implied.
UniGuide shall not be liable for:
- Any damages or losses resulting from use or inability to use UniGuide.
- Any unauthorized access or alteration of your data.
- Any third-party claims or actions.

Indemnification:

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless UniGuide, its officers, directors, employees, and agents from any claims, damages, or expenses arising from your use or misuse of UniGuide.

Termination:

UniGuide reserves the right to terminate or suspend your account and access to UniGuide at any time, without notice.

Governing Law:

These Terms and Conditions shall be governed by and construed in accordance with Nigerian laws.

Changes to Terms:

UniGuide reserves the right to modify these Terms and Conditions at any time. Changes are effective immediately upon posting.

Campus expansion, contributors, and platform use

The following terms apply to campus mapping, ambassador-style participation, and related collaboration. If you need details on how personal data is handled, please also read our Privacy Policy.

Platform ownership. UniGuide and its associated systems, software, design, data structures, mapping frameworks, website infrastructure, and brand identity are the exclusive intellectual property of UniGuide. Participation in campus mapping, ambassador programs, or other collaborative initiatives does not grant contributors ownership rights over the UniGuide platform, its services, or any part of its infrastructure. All rights not expressly granted to users remain reserved by UniGuide.
Contributor and Campus Ambassador role. Students or individuals who assist in expanding UniGuide to new campuses may serve as Campus Contributors or Campus Ambassadors. These roles are voluntary and are intended to support: campus mapping and location data collection; community outreach and awareness; and coordination of local volunteers. Campus Ambassadors and contributors act solely as representatives of UniGuide and do not hold ownership, executive authority, or operational control over the platform. UniGuide retains full authority over platform operations, decisions, policies, and campus deployments.
Data submission and ownership. Contributors may submit information including but not limited to: campus building locations; coordinates and navigation routes; photos of facilities or landmarks; descriptions of campus services. By submitting such content, contributors grant UniGuide a perpetual, worldwide, royalty-free license to use, modify, display, store, and distribute such materials as part of the UniGuide platform. All submitted mapping data becomes part of UniGuide’s platform database and may be used for platform development, navigation services, and related features.
Restrictions on platform replication. Users, contributors, ambassadors, or partners agree not to: copy or replicate the UniGuide platform; reverse engineer UniGuide systems or mapping structures; create competing services based on UniGuide’s processes, workflows, or data models; or extract data from the platform for use in competing products. Any attempt to reproduce or commercialize UniGuide’s platform concept, infrastructure, or data without authorization is strictly prohibited.
Brand and identity protection. The UniGuide name, logo, brand assets, and associated identifiers may not be used to create independent services, websites, applications, or commercial initiatives without prior written approval from UniGuide. Campus representatives may promote UniGuide within their institutions but may not represent themselves as founders, owners, or operators of the platform. Unauthorized use of the UniGuide brand may result in termination of participation privileges.
Monetization and commercial activities. All monetization, partnerships, advertising arrangements, and commercial opportunities conducted through the UniGuide platform are managed exclusively by UniGuide. Campus ambassadors, contributors, or volunteers may not independently charge fees, sell advertising placements, or conduct commercial activities using the UniGuide name without formal authorization. UniGuide reserves the right to introduce future commercial features including but not limited to: campus advertising; business listings; sponsored content; vendor partnerships.
Accuracy of submitted information. UniGuide strives to provide accurate campus navigation information; however, some data may be submitted by community contributors. UniGuide does not guarantee the accuracy, completeness, or timeliness of all submitted information and shall not be held liable for errors, omissions, or outdated data. Users are encouraged to report inaccuracies to improve platform reliability.
Platform management rights. UniGuide reserves the right to: review and verify submitted campus data; modify, update, or remove submitted information; add or remove campus locations from the platform; update or discontinue platform features. These actions may be taken at UniGuide’s discretion to maintain platform integrity.
Termination of participation. UniGuide may suspend or terminate the participation of contributors or ambassadors if their actions: violate these Terms and Conditions; misrepresent the UniGuide platform; attempt to exploit the platform for personal gain; or harm the reputation or integrity of UniGuide. Termination may occur without prior notice if necessary to protect the platform.
Governing law (campus expansion terms). These Terms and Conditions shall be governed by and interpreted in accordance with the laws of Nigeria. Any disputes arising from the use of the UniGuide platform shall be subject to the jurisdiction of the appropriate courts within Nigeria.

Artificial intelligence and AI-assisted content

Certain features of UniGuide — including article generation, content summarisation, and metadata extraction — are powered by third-party artificial intelligence services (such as Google Gemini and OpenAI). By using these features, you acknowledge and agree that:

Content you submit through AI-assisted features may be transmitted to third-party AI providers for processing, as described in our Privacy Policy.
AI-generated or AI-assisted content is provided for convenience and informational purposes only. UniGuide does not guarantee the accuracy, completeness, or suitability of AI-generated content and it should not be relied upon as professional, legal, medical, academic, or financial advice.
You retain responsibility for any content you publish that incorporates AI-generated suggestions. Submitting AI-generated content that is false, misleading, or harmful may result in removal and suspension of access.
UniGuide may use AI to assist in content moderation, quality scoring, and platform operations.

Push notifications

UniGuide may offer opt-in push notifications to inform you of platform activity, contribution milestones, campus alerts, or other relevant updates. Push notifications are entirely optional. By enabling them, you consent to the storage of your push subscription on our servers as described in our Privacy Policy. You may revoke notification permission at any time through your browser or operating system settings. UniGuide will not use push notifications to deliver unsolicited commercial messages unrelated to your use of the platform.

Advertising

UniGuide may display advertisements on parts of the platform, served by Google AdSense or similar networks. By using the platform, you agree to the display of such advertisements. You agree not to: click on advertisements fraudulently or repeatedly for any purpose other than genuine interest; use automated tools to interact with advertisements; or attempt to interfere with ad delivery systems. Ad networks may use cookies and tracking technologies as described in our Privacy Policy.

Third-party services and payment processing

UniGuide relies on third-party providers to operate the platform. These include Paystack for processing payments and subscriptions, Cloudinary for hosting and delivering uploaded images and media, and Cloudflare for content delivery, DNS, and security. By using UniGuide you acknowledge that your use of these features is also subject to the respective provider's terms of service.

Where a feature requires payment, transactions are processed by Paystack. You agree to provide accurate and complete payment information and confirm that you are authorised to use the payment method you provide. UniGuide does not store your full card or bank details; these are handled directly by Paystack. Fees, charges, and any refund or cancellation terms for a specific paid feature will be presented to you before purchase, and completing a payment constitutes acceptance of those terms. UniGuide is not responsible for delays, failures, or errors caused by a payment processor or your financial institution. UniRide and future services

UniGuide is developing UniRide, a campus ride-sharing feature, and may introduce additional services over time. Features labelled as "Coming Soon" or in preview are provided as placeholders and are not yet operational. When UniRide or other services launch, they will be governed by supplemental terms specific to those services, which will be presented to you before you use them. Those supplemental terms will address matters including but not limited to: location data collection during rides, driver and passenger obligations, liability, payments, and safety. Your use of UniRide or any future service will constitute acceptance of the applicable supplemental terms in addition to these Terms of Service.

Proprietary Data, Scraping, and Competitive Use

UniGuide's dataset — including but not limited to campus map data, building coordinates, navigation routes, location metadata, institution records, organizational structures, article content, marker attributes, contribution histories, and any derived or aggregated data — constitutes proprietary intellectual property of UniGuide ("UniGuide Data"). UniGuide Data is compiled through significant investment of time, labor, and resources and is protected under applicable intellectual property, database, and unfair competition laws.

By accessing or using UniGuide, you expressly agree that you will not:

Scrape or crawl the platform. Use any automated tool, bot, spider, script, browser extension, or other mechanism to access, extract, index, copy, or monitor UniGuide Data or any portion of the platform, except as expressly permitted by a written agreement with UniGuide or as permitted by applicable law that cannot be excluded by contract.
Bulk export or harvest data. Download, export, reproduce, or systematically collect UniGuide Data in bulk, whether through the platform's interface, its API, or any indirect method including interception of network traffic or reverse engineering of platform responses.
Use data for competitive purposes. Use UniGuide Data, in whole or in part, to build, train, populate, or enhance any product, service, database, machine-learning model, or system that competes with or is intended to compete with UniGuide, including campus navigation tools, student-facing mapping services, institutional directories, or location-based campus platforms.
Resell or redistribute data. Sell, license, sublicense, transfer, publish, or otherwise make UniGuide Data available to any third party for commercial or non-commercial purposes without prior written authorization from UniGuide.
Use data to train AI or ML models. Use UniGuide Data as training data, fine-tuning data, evaluation data, or any other input for artificial intelligence or machine-learning systems without explicit written consent from UniGuide.

Violation of this section constitutes a material breach of these Terms of Service and may result in immediate termination of access, civil legal action, and claims for damages including injunctive relief and recovery of profits derived from unauthorized use. UniGuide reserves the right to implement technical measures — including rate limiting, access controls, and CAPTCHA — to detect and prevent prohibited activity, and the deployment of such measures does not waive any of UniGuide's rights under this section or applicable law.
